Inanna's Home Studio

Back by popular demand. We're continuing our several-years-long tradition of hosting what is now the annual Winter Holiday Hafla.

We always have too much food, because everyone's more interested in drumming and dancing than eating. I will have a few munchies and some non-alcoholic beverages. If there is something in particular that you would like to eat or drink and the spirit moves you to bring it ... feel free to do so.

You can find us at 841 NE Barnes Ave.; Village of Oaks, Missouri 64118.

We're easy to find, near the major intersection of N. Oak Trafficway and Englewood Road north of the river in the KC Metro area. If you require directions or have questions, our phone is (816) 453-7122.

Also -- I spoke with M'Chelle about what we needed to do to raise funds to bring Kaeshi of Bellyqueen and her drummer to Kansas City, so they can teach us the dances and rhythms we need to know to have an official chapter of PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experience).

The Floating Haflas will always be free of charge for any drummers and dancers who would like to attend.

However, we will have a free-love-offering jar out for people who wish to contribute to PURE's efforts to raise enough money to bring Kaeshi to town. So if you feel the urge to donate a dollar or two (or more) to the cause at the Holiday Hafla, we would welcome your contribution.

Dear Drummers,

I had a a couple conversations with Josh and Uriah and there is a desire to develop a quality drumming program for Vesuvius fire spinners. I wonder who might be interested to work out a program which will satisfy the performers and will be enjoyable for the drummers as well. I could imagine to create a mix of middle eastern music (Lilly's help will be beneficial), west african poly beats (slower speed) some melange and maybe a few carribean songs. Additionally ideas and songs from the performers pool should be integrated. Josh has some ideas from his perspective. Dedicated drummers are needed which are skilled and are willing to practize regularely and more frequent for upcoming shows and if necessary a little bit at home as well. Additionally it will be necessary that multiple people will explore potential material and work it out for introduction to the group. The group shoud be limited to nine drummers.

Please let me know what you think

Sooo..... this morning I'm up getting ready for work and I'm trying to kick my kids out of bed to get ready for school and one of my sons looks at me with one of those expressions that says there's more going on that just not wanting to get up. Turns out he's running a fever, his glands are all swollen in his neck and his throat and tonsils look absolutely horrible. Like maybe strep-horrible. He can barely talk and is having trouble just swallowing water. I told him to go ahead and stay home from school and be ready when I get home from work so that I can take him to the clinic tonight. Which of course means: It looks like another Monday will probably go by without my being able to drum with my family! AAAAAAAAUUUGH!! <= - /

Kyrka having skipped New Years Eve in 2006 to freeze his ass off in Iowa, and promptly returning, it's long overdue: New Years Burnin' Eve is returning to Kansas City and you're cordially invited to attend! Co-conspirators include Alonzo, Eric, Bubbles and Aldric. We'll toast the New Year as midnight falls on each of the time zones in the United States, allowing for party-hopping throughout the evening. Plan accordingly and you may even finish the night out with us as we toast with Alaska and Hawaii!

Safe crash space will be provided – feel free to bring inflatable mattresses, etc. [We do request an RSVP.] The chill room will be in full effect as always, and DJ Clandestine will provide special aural sensations.
A mystery breakfast reminiscent of an afternoon in Black Rock City will also be provided.

Ok, so like the holidays are upon us and there has been some discussion as to when we should meet over the next couple of weeks. There has been discussion around meeting on Saturday and/or Monday and I have offered to open the Space on both days. For those of you who don't know I am Pagan and there is a celebration Saturday evening as well that I would like to make it to at some point so I want to lock in a time for Saturday drumming so I can figure out which part of the Yule celebration I can attend. I kinda think going to the potluck sounds like the most fun since that would be the time when I can visit with all my wonderful friends.....do y'all want to get together in the afternoon, early evening, late evening....????? Post your thoughts/opinions here so we can lock down a time....

Also, given Monday is Christmas Eve I figured it would be best to have the meetup a tad bit earlier so everyone can get home at a decent time....I have an important story to read with my children!! So.....what time u wanna drum on Monday???? 5-7....6-8......6:30-8:30......speak up now or forever yadda, yadda, yadda, blah, blah, blah....

And then there is New Years Eve......shall we drum then? If so what time?? If not, are we just skippin' that one or do you want to do something on the 28th or 29th? Ok....I'm done now...................................

let the conversation begin!!

I just wanted to take a moment to say 'Thank You'.....I didn't realize until I was pulling out of the parking lot last night how much I have missed everyone. I have been keeping my head up and focusing on all the tasks in front of me, but had been feeling empty at the same time. I honestly have to say that this is the most challenged I have ever been. I am juggling everything and am very proud of the way I have handled certain situations as of late, but each day I woke I struggled to push myself. Your hugs last night helped deminish the emptiness and filled me with wonderful energy. :D For this I thank each one of you....some of you I barely know, but through our luv of drumming we have all found a place to feel at home.

Much luv and warm hugs 2 u all!

Hey all-

So......... with A) my wife's back issues and doctor's appointments [herniated disks] and B) my issues with my daughter and C) Mondays just being tough in general..... well, drumming with the KC Drum Tribe at Loose Park has turned out to be a great "goal" and source of weekly frustration so far!!

A couple of you have asked so I thought I'd fill you in: My 17 year-old daughter decided she was going to move out about a week and-a-half ago to go live with a friend. an unstable friend. who happens to live with her "ex-step-grandmother." and an uncle. (I know, wtf...right?)

Anyway- there's a really long story I could get into, but the bottom line is that she's back home for the moment and things are semi-back-to-normal. Right now she has no diploma, no money, no job, no car and no CLUE.
If we can just keep her at home until graduation and spend the next 8 months helping her to get READY to move out..... well then, at least we'll know that we did our part to try to give her a good start.

I'm sure things will smooth out very soon and I'll start seeing a lot more of you all. Looking forward to it - and looking forward to seeing you at Waterfire!   = - }

I first got into them when i participated in one at the Fringe Fest here in kc, at the library downtown, on the roof. I felt an energy there that I cannot explain, but was very powerful, and I want to experience that again and again with a group of good spirirted people. I live in the KC metro and I have 3 congas (tumba, conga and quinto) that I play regularly. I am a learner and am relying on videos to develop techniques, so if anyone has skill playing congas, I would be glad to learn from you, if you would be willing to teach. I first got interested in playing congas when I looked for alternative sources of music (got sick of nonsense rap and R&B). When Celia Cruz died, i wanted to know why she was considered a legend, so I listened to some of her songs and heard the congas. . . it was love at first listen! Now, I buy salsa CD's for enjoyment and playing along with, and am learning spanish. Anyway, I have talked for too long now, sorry for all the info, but can I drum with you guys? When is the next drum circle? Thank you for listening (or reading). Humbly. . . . . . . . . .

I have a good idea of who will be participating in our planning meeting, but need to get a firm head count because the space is on the 3rd floor of a locked building. I'll need to wait outside for everyone to arrive then we head up!! Please post to confirm....

Just for clarification..

This is something a small group of us from the Drum Tribe have decided to do. It is not required that you participate in this event to be part of this tribe. We just thought it would be a great idea to incorporate drums into a ritual so we're gonna do it!

The space is where Vesuvius practices. It is in an old downtown building at 19th and Oak. There are 2 parking lots on the corner. You can pull in there or park in the alley right behind the parking lots.

If you show up late feel free to call me at 816.668.5546 and I'll come down to let you in!!

Again this meeting is to plan out all the details for our drumming Samhain ritual....we welcome all ideas so if you're interested feel free to join us for this planning meeting!!

Oh and one more thing....feel free to bring your drum!! I wanna hear them fill up the space!!

Much luv and warm hugs..

The symbol of ST. JOHN is the eagle, because from first to last his Gospel soars on eagle's wings to the very throne of heaven. The figures near the bottom of each window are merely decorative.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:1-14, NKJV).

Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” (John 20:17, NIV).

This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true. Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. (John 21:24-25, ESV).

In the beginning, there was the fire. The eternal, ever-transforming, creative source and fabric of All That Is. When the fire had children, she named one Drummer, and the other, Dancer. Drummer contained within himself all of the boldness, passion, spark, and courage of the fire. Dancer contained within herself all the grace, beauty, sensuousness, and comfort of the fire. Drummer heard the song of the fire within his heart, and he played a noble song upon his drum to honor it. Dancer felt the joy of existence within her heart, and reflected that joy in her dance. Drummer and Dancer travelled far and wide, and played many games together, knowing that every game they played was but a reflection of the play of the eternal fire.

In time though, their eyelids grew heavy and they grew sleepy. Drummer drummed for so long that he came to believe that the song he heard was his alone, and his rhythm was no longer harmonious. Dancer kicked up so much dust in her frenzy that she could no longer see the light of the fire.

It was only when Drummer listened to the space between the beats, and heard the voice of the silence, that he could hear the fire burning in his heart again. And it was only when Dancer looked deep into the stillness of her motion, when she allowed the fire to burn away her ego, that she regained her vision and her true nature.
Kinda what we've already done actually. Anyone care to make this happen in a more intentional circle? I've been wanting to do this forever, but until recently I haven't known the right peope who might make it happen.

I'm sure if my brain weren't swishing in rum it would be easier to express this, but hopefully this will do.

topic posted Wed, July 25, 2007 - 10:19 AM by Inanna

Anyone else interested in local branch of PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) here in Kansas City?

If you're not familiar with PURE, check out their website: www.puredance.org/index.html

Here is the summary from their web site of what the organization is all about:

"PURE is collective of dancers and drummers who take music and dance out into the streets for the purposes of healing and peace. Movements from ancient sacred world traditions including Middle Eastern, Chinese, Romani gypsy, Israeli folk, Flamenco, Indian dance and drumming will be incorporated into the PURE experience.

"Dance and ritual create community, drawing people together both emotionally and physically into a shared sense of the divine. As the community participates, no one is a stranger any longer.

"Dancers and musicians will be travelling down the sidewalks and into subways and public spaces to share their love of dance and music with the public and to pay homage to specific sites.

"Visit pure-dance.tribe.net to participate in online discussions and to see more photos.

"PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) is a sponsored project at "The Field", a not-for-profit, tax exempt, 501(c)(3) organization. Gifts made through that organization are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law."
